The Stone Roses are back.
We thought we will never get to see them here in Singapore -- Brit rock fans are in for a treat as seminal band The Stone Roses are making their way here in July.
After a 15-year break, The Stone Roses are finally back. The band announced last year that they're back and will be embarking on a series of shows across the world. Commenting on the band’s comeback, frontman Ian Brown has been quoted as saying that the band is "ready to take the world by storm". Their first shows in the UK sold 225,000 tickets in just over an hour after going on sale.
The concert here is slated for 22 July at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
One of the most influential bands from Manchester, England in the 80s, The Stone Roses' --made up of Ian Brown, John Squire, Alan ‘Reni’ Wren and Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield eponymous debut album is regarded as one of the greatest British albums of all time. That LP – featuring songs like ‘I Wanna Be Adored’, ‘She Bangs The Drums’ and ‘Made of Stone’ – was released in May 1989 when the band had already built a huge following in the North West.
'One Love' – The Stone Roses
They released ‘Fool’s Gold’ in November 1989, delivering a legendary performance of the song on Top of the Pops, alongside fellow members of the Madchester music scene, Happy Mondays.
The same month they played Alexandra Palace in London – the first time a gig had been played there in 16 years – before turning a bird sanctuary in the Wirral peninsula into a massive concert venue.
Their gig, in front of 30,000 fans at Spike Island near Widnes, Cheshire, at the end of May 1990 is regarded as one of the seminal moments in British rock.
Referencing the band's famous 1989 track "I Am The Resurrection," Brown told journalists at a press conference last year: "This is a live resurrection, and you're invited…”
An invitation too hot to resist of course for music fans; and to borrow the title from their 1994 album – this is the ‘Second Coming’ indeed.
The Stone Roses performs in Singapore 22 July. Tickets $128 (standing), $148, $128, $68 available from Sistic from 12 April.
